I always associated The Apartment with horror movies since its title fits right in with The Birds, The Ring, The Exorcist, The Shining… you get it. But, The Apartment could not be any farther from a horror movie, and I’m glad I finally got over my irrational reluctance to watch it. The Apartment is a romantic comedy with quirky and endearing, yet flawed, characters. Jack Lemmon stars as C.C. Baxter, a simple man working at an insurance company who lends out his apartment to company executives for their extramarital trysts. Shirley MacLaine stars opposite Lemmon as Fran Kubelik, an elevator operator at Baxter’s office building.
There is a reason why this movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is much more than a romantic comedy. There are serious subjects (and controversial at the time the movie came out) like adultery, deception, and others that I won’t mention for fear of giving too much away. The relationships in the movie are relatable and honest. And, Jack Lemmon is just excellent. This is a definite must-see for lovers of old movies or clever romantic comedies.
